1979 Compton Press calendar for David Games Tutors- Jonathan Gili and Ian Beck

£30.00

Product description

Tisbury: Compton Press, 1978. Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. The month of August has a mark at top, see photo. Spiral-bound at head. "This calendar was . . . originally printed at the Compton Press for David Game Tutors. It pleased us so much that we asked Ian Beck to undertake two new drawings for January & December." Edition limited to 250 copies. Documentary film-maker and collector extraordinary, Jonathan Gili (1943-2004) was also a quirky small-press publisher who deployed his eye for design not only for books as grand as John Betjeman's Metro-Land (1977, with lithographs by Glynn Boyd Harte) but also for calendars for his sometime school-friend David Game's group of tutorial colleges, founded in 1974. Latterly, he used his own artful photographs; his early calendars deployed a talented team of illustrators. This one is a happy family affair. Humphrey Stone (1942-), the second son of the engraver Reynolds Stone, was design director at the Compton Press. His sister Phillida (1944-) married Jonathan Gili; and his younger sister, Emma (1952-), the illustrator Ian Beck (1947-).
The month of August has a mark at top, see photo.
