Martha Mary acted as an unpaid servant to her father and younger sisters and brother. She has the added problem of Aunt Sophie, confined upstairs, who occasionally has an violent fantasy life. A series of dramatic disasters are set in motion that will change all of their lives.
Published by Heinemann in 1975, this first edition is signed on the title page by the author, Catherine Cookson (writing under the pseudonym Catherine Marchant). The dustjacket is a little rubbed along all edges and is also a little shelf-worn, but it is unpriceclipped. The blue cloth boards are gilt-stamped on the spine, which is slightly bumped at the head and foot.  The page block is yellowing slightly but is clean and bright. The binding is firm.
