George Routledge & Sons 1880. Hardcover, first edition; Good condition. 8vo,367pp plus 6pp publisher’s adverts at rear, 6 b/w plates. Page edges gilt; some slight foxing but text clean. Binding sound, brown cloth with black and gilt pictorial, spine slightly damaged top and bottom, board corners and edges bumped.

The author served as a junior minister under Lord Russell and W E Gladstone, and was raised to the peerage as the first Lord Brabourne. He produced 15 volumes of fantasy and faery stories illustrated by leading illustrators of the time which became very popular and commercially successful in the Christmas market. His stories were described in The Times as ‘of a very high order’.
