This book is a detailed and comprehensive treatise interspersed with sundry anecdotes and reminiscences.  The contents Include: history of drink; drinks ancient and modern; some old recipes; glorious beer; all ale; a discourse on spirits; cups which cheer; punch; strange drinks; champagne; old and new wines; cocktails; cider; cordials and liqueurs; hangover cures; temperance; index of recipes etc. The cover design is by Phil May.

The cover has a few stains and other small marks, and the edges are bumped and rubbed. There is slight foxing to the endpapers and a few pages at the front of the book, but the binding is tight and the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. A bookplate is attached to the front endpaper, and there is a blind stamp (W H Smith and Sons Library,186 Strand) at the back.
