Allenby: Soldier and Statesman

£29.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

382 pp. 1946 first edition, signed by author Field Marshall Viscount Wavell, see note 2 below. Red cloth covers, gilt lettering to spine. Covers are clean, with light edgewear, minor chips, and minor bumping to corners. Bumping to spine head and tail. marks to rear cover. Block is clean, with minor foxing. Binding remains good, one initial plate shows an incidence of shaking. Pages, plates, and pull-out maps, are clean, with natural ageing colouration. No notes, marks, or annotations noted.

This 1946 edition is the first combined edition of two earlier publications ..... "Allenby: A Study in Greatness", first published Sept 1940; and "Allenby in Egypt", first published January 1944.

This copy has two personal aspects, the second adding value:
1) a personal library label is adhered to front paste-down, indicating a previous owner being "Robert Nigel Bright Brunt"
2) the author's own signed surname shows on the title page (uncorroborated, but same as other signatures of Wavell on web). In this case however, instead of the author's usual "F.M" following the surname, the initials are "E.M". July 1946", in different ink to the surname, see photo. Whilst not corroborated, this is believed to be the field marshall's wife Eugenie Marie.
