£45.00

Product description

Arne Kalland. Fishing villages in Tokugawa, Japan. Hawaii UP, Honolulu 1st Ed 356pp. VG condition in fine, untorn dj. £45. With 23 tables and numerous maps and figures.
Arne Kalland was a Researcher at Oslo University specialising in maritime life in South-East Asia of which he has written several studies. This is regarded as his most accomplished work. He died in 2012.
According to the dj. blurb, ' the aims of this book are to place the maritime resource management within the larger context of social and material reproduction and to analyse the fishing villages in the context of Japan's economic history.' It was the author's view- a sensible one - that the past needs to be studied to understand the present situation in the Japanese fishing industry. Hence, this study of fishing villages in the Tokugawa period when they acted as key commercial links between the castle towns and dispersed farming communities.
