Product description

France Overseas - The Great War and the Climax of French Imperial Expansion

"During the First World War and its immediate aftermath France completed the second largest empire in world history. New territories came to her from the break up both of the German Empire in Africa and of the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East. The climax of French empire-building has never before been fully analysed, and it makes a remarkable story. Previous authors have shown how governments tend to lose control of their soldiers and officials at the outposts of empire. Christopher Andrew and A. S. Kanya-Forstner demonstrate that the French government largely lost control of imperial policy even in its own capital."

There is an extensive list of sources and notes at the back. The book also includes four maps of the regions involved.

Book pages are in very good condition. There is light foxing on the page edges.
The blue hardback cover is in good condition, with some fading due to light exposure at the top and bottom.
The uncut dust-cover has some wear, particularly at the edges.
