Intellectual Women and Victorian Patriarchy

£15.00

Product description

273pp. 1987. Hardback. Good condition. Rubbing to DJ edges. Some light scoring. Tanning to outer page edges. Fine spine. Previous owners name has been scribbled out of front page alongside previous price. Otherwise clean text.

This challenging study claims that three prominent Victorian women writers both affirmed and subverted Victorian patriarchy. Harriet Martineau, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and George Eliot struggled to construct careers as women intellectuals in a world of men of letters. Although Victorian patriiachy labelled them clever and industrious, learned and sensitive, sagacious and brilliant, they were never free of a tension inherent in the Victorian subjugation of woman's mind by male authority.
