The Age of Equipoise

Product description

Title: The Age of Equipoise

Author: W. L. Burn

This book is neither an 'exposure' of the mid Victorian generation nor an attempt to recover a vanished enchantment. What the author has sought to do is ' to examine and describe certain aspects of English life and thought between 1852 - 1867, certain ways of looking at things, certain men and women whose actions and opinions formed or at least illustrate those ways.' He is aware of the difficulty of his task - 'the gap between the mid Victorian age and ours widens and narrows and widens again': at one moment it seems that our great grandfathers were very much as we are; at another their thoughts and actions seem so bizarre, so little credible, that they could have been the inhabitants, not just of another century but of another world.

The book has green boards and gilt lettering to the upper board and spine.

The upper outer corner of the lower board has bumping.

The upper and lower edge of the spine of the boards has bumping.

The front of the dust jacket has heavy wear and tear along the edge of the lower outer corner.
