“’The Bull in the Mediterranean World’ looks at the male symbolic universe of the ancient cultures around Mare Nostrum – Our Sea – amongst whom the bull acquired a number of different meanings and became a cult object and a central motif in secular and religious rituals. This volume contains the detailed catalogue of the 213 works displayed in this exhibition, together with an opening series of essays written by specialist researchers and historians, who look in depth at some of the most important aspects of the bull and its cult. The numerous myths, iconological associations, traditions and types of objects reveal the symbolic importance of the bull in the ancient Mediterranean.”
