The Kerensky Memoirs: Russia and History's Turning Point

£180.00

Product description

A signed copy of The Memoirs of Alexander Kerensky (1881-1970), which constitute a major source for the history of the Russian Revolution of 1917. This is a first hand account of the Revolution from one of the principal participants.  For the memoirs Kerensky drew on his earlier 'Prelude to Bolshevism' and 'Crucifixion of Liberty'. Kerensky was the only socialist in the Provisional Government headed by Prince Lvov after the February Revolution. He served as Minister of Justice and then Minister of War. In July 1917 Kerensky replaced Lvov as Prime Minister, leading the government as it continued to prosecute the war against Germany. Kerensky remained in power until the October Revolution, when his government was overthrown by Lenin and the Bolsheviks. Subsequently he went into hiding before going into exile. The memoirs deal with Kerensky's early years and political activity before the First World War, but the main focus is on the revolution of 1917 and his part in those tumultuous events. In 1966 Isaac Deutscher described the Memoirs as 'an essential part of the historical documentation of the Russian Revolution'.

The book is well bound in brown boards and the pages are in good condition, but with some staining of the edges. The black and white photographs are well preserved. The dust jacket is complete but chipped and damaged along the top edge.

This copy is the first British edition and is signed by Kerensky himself.
