Vietnam's Famous Ancient Pagodas

£60.00

Product description

Vietnam's Famous Ancient Pagodas - Vo Van Tuong

Published in Hanoi by Nha Xuat Ban Khoa Hoc Xa Hoi (Social Sciences Publishing House). First edition 1992.
Presented in a knocked cardboard slipcase, torn to most corners but still intact and square. Pictorial front face. Thumb guides. Rear face stamped 215000.

All text is in Vietnamese, French, English and Chinese.
The book has been protected from new by a PVC sleeve, now irreversibly stuck to the jacket. The PVC is scuffed but the jacket within looks fine.
Pictorial faces show off the superb historic artifacts.

Grey cloth boards, apparently fine. Wonderful near-tissue grade paper with many pages having pretty stamped "watermarks." Fine throughout. Block structure outstanding. A heavy and dense book.

171 pagodas considered, all with photographs. The descriptions of the pagodas are rather lacking in warmth, perhaps due to the translation, eg
Pagoda number 104.2: The Bell Tower of Xa Loi . . . "The seven-storeyed tower was built on December 15th 1960 and inaugurated on December 23th 1981. The great bell was hung on October 17th 1961 under the honorable attestation of etc. etc.".
(The lengthy delay until inauguration was presumably due to the war.)

Very thorough reference guide written by the Buddhist Research Institute director, whose offices are in Xa Loi.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
