A collection of three antiquarian Punch (or the London Charivari) magazine almanacs dated:
Jan 1878 - Jan 1879
July 1919 - Dec 1919
Jan 1930 - June 1930
All volumes are hardbound. The magazine was published weekly and all volumes are complete for their dates. There are hundreds of Punch's famous black and white cartoons in each volume, some of which are full page. Each volume measures 28.5cm x 22cm and each book is 3-3.5cm thick.
The 1878 volume has decorated hardboards and endpapers. There is some edge and corner wear. The book block is soiled and has become detached from the covers and repair has been attempted. The inner pages, however, are firmly bound and in good condition being lightly tanned only with no foxing, stains or tears. The text and illustrations are clear throughout.
The claret coloured cloth covers of the 1919 volume are badly scuffed and show considerable corner bumping and edge wear. The book block is soiled. The binding is firm. Pages are uniformly tanned but show no foxing, stained or tears, though a few have been folded over at the very corners. The text and illustrations are clear throughout.
The 1930 volume has lighter red covers which are stained and scuffed with bumping. The spine is faded and the top few centimetres torn. The book block is soiled. The bindings are very taut. Pages are lightly tanned. The first 70 or so pages show some water damage to the outer edge and particularly the top right corner, which has taken on a pink staining (see photograph for the worst affected page). For the most part this does not affect the text or illustrations which, in the remaining pages are clear. Unfortunately, four cartoons have been cut out, three small and one half page size.
