A Study in Island History

£19.99

Product description

Before a real understanding of the role of the Highlands and Islands in Scottish history at any period can be reached, island history and parish history must be given much more serious attention than they have so far received. The consideration of an island on its own is not the most desirable approach: often Raasay has to be seen in relation to conditions prevailing on Skye. But without such limited and detailed studies, the general historian has to little direct evidence from which to work.  The purpose of this essay is to show what kind of detail can be got from a wide range of source material, none of which is especially informative on its own.  The primary reason for choosing Raasay as the subject of study is that it offers, in one small unit, an opportunity to see almost all the major influences and trends in the history of the Western Highlands and Islands.
