OVID As an Epic Poet

£19.99

Product description

Title: OVID as an epic Poet

Author: Brooks Otis

Olive H. Palmer Professor of Humanities
Stanford University

Ovid's Metamorphoses is the 'other' epic of the Augustan age, at once like and unlike the greater, more profound, epic of Virgil. The Aeneid is patriotic and heroic; the Metamorphoses humorous and pathetic. It is the epic of love. Professor Otis shows that Ovid, like Virgil, attained to the stature of a major poet when he deliberately confronted the subject matter of his masterpiece, but that he had the insight and self - knowledge not to challenge the greater poet in any direct rivalry.

The book has blue boards and gilt lettering to the spine.

There are tanning stains along the spine.

The upper and lower edge of the spine have bumping.

The upper edge of the outer corner of the upper board has wear and all 3 remaining corners upper and lower of the upper and lower board have bumping. The upper corner of the rear board has wear and tear.
