Product description

Title:  Ten Novels and their Authors

Author: W. Somerset Maugham

"I have in my time, hoping to improve myself, read several books on the novel," Mr SOmersert Maugham states in his opening chapter. He confesses that he gained little from them and he goes on to expose the heresies which enfeeble the art of fiction; an art which, in the extensive discussion surrounding it today, has even be called a dying one.

In these studies of ten great novels he not only examines the characters and lives of those who conceived and created them but sets an incomparable example of what literary criticism should be.

Ten Novels and Their Authors is a guide to readers on how to extract the maximum enjoyment from literary masterpieces; it contains highly original advice on how to criticise and how to judge criticism itself.

The book has green boards and gilt lettering to the spine.

The upper and lower boards have an imprint of the Heinemann logo.

The upper and lower boards have a sprinkling of light green stains across them.

The upper and lower spine have bumping.

As can be seen from the picture the dust jacket has heavy wear and tear on the upper spine and bumping and wear and tear on the lower spine.

The lower edge of the front of the dust jacket has heavy wear and tear.

All four upper and lower corners on the front and rear of the dust jacket have wear and tear.

The upper and lower edge of the rear of the dust jacket has wear and tear.

The edge of the front sleeve has wear and tear towards the bottom.

There is foxing on the inside of the dust jacket.
