These directories were published for the information of prospective pupils' parents and provided detailed information on each school included, for example the composition of the Board of Governors, the teaching staff (with qualifications), a brief description of the curriculum and after school activities including, where available, the OTC (Officers' Training Corps.), scholarships available and honours gained by former pupils. 1940 was the 51st year of publication.
A heavy volume bound in blue cloth with faded gilt lettering to the spine, there is wear to the spine and the corners of the boards are bumped. Text block edges are age toned, the block is tight, apart from a split between the end papers at the rear, which exposes some webbing. All text is clearly legible.
Following the school information are advertisements relating to education (e.g. Ross Epidiascopes, Esse Cookers in Schools, Nesbit-Evans Spring Bedsteads).
The preface mentions that 26 public schools and 70 preparatory schools had to move to temporary addresses because of World War 2.
