Sutra Spoken by the Sixth Patriarch on the High Seat of "The Treasure of the Law"

£39.99

Product description

Translator's Preface: "This is an English translation of the Sutra Spoken by the Sixth Patriarch on the High Seat of the Treasure of the Law (Nanjio's Catalogue No 1525) which records the sermons and sayings of Wei Lang (638-713), the most famous Dhyana Master of the Tang Dynasty". Reputedly called the only Sutra spoken by a native of China.

Paperback 5" x 7.5" with 178 pages in total, 128 pages in English, then 50 pages in Chinese calligraphy (numbered from the back into centre). Forward is dated December 1952. The binding is mainly sound. During the book making, the text block has been stapled through twice from the back to the front ending on what is the third of three illustration pages. The first and third illustration pages were printed as a fold and a single page 2nd illustration has been inserted between them. The front cover, title page and 1st illustration page are all glued together but the glue joining them to the main text block has parted leaving the rusted ends of the two staples visible.

The title page has a hand written dedication "To Mrs Richards with best wishes from Humphrey with love 11.11.76". The reverse of the title page has been partially stuck to the first illustration page and pealed apart leaving slight damage.

The coral coloured paper cover has slight fading down the spine and three small water blemishes on the front. The cover paste down pages were only glued down the outer and inner edges and on the front cover it appears that missed the top 1" and bottom corner were not glued. The glue to the spine gutters has taken a little of the coral colour.

The top left hand corner of the back cover and last 5 pages of the book have a very small reducing fold. Pages 97 to 106 also have a small fold at the bottom corner. Pages 27 and 28 were printed together and the fold along the bottom of the pages was not cut leaving them joined. It would appear that someone has tried to separate them by lifting in from the outer edge for approx 1" and then left them joined. A sliver of rough edge protrudes for about 0.5". Given age of book and fact that the cover is made from paper, internally the writing and illustrations are all very clear, legible and in good condition.
