Second Foundation - Signed by author

£100.00

Product description

Isaac Asimov's 'Foundation' trilogy is generally considered a classic of science fiction writing. "Second Foundation" is the third volume, and the fifth in the 'in-universe' chronology. First published in 1953, it consists of two previously published novellas (1948 and 1950). Decades later, Asimov wrote the two prequels, to form the trilogy, and two further sequels. Later writers have added authorised tales to the series. The term "Foundation" describes the organisation first mentioned in "Foundation", searched for in "Foundation and Empire", and briefly appearing in "Second Foundation". It was not described in detail until "Foundation's Edge".

Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) was an American writer and professor of biochemistry at Boston University, known for his works of science fiction and popular science. A prolific writer, he wrote or edited more than 500 books and an estimated 90,000 letters and postcards. Asimov wrote 'hard' science fiction and with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke was considered one of the "Big Three" science fiction writers during his lifetime. His most famous work is the "Foundation" series, the first three books of which won the one-time Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966. His other major series are the "Galactic Empire" series and the "Robot" series.

Our copy is in only fair condition, but is signed by the author (see photo). The dedicatee, Michael Mallows, was a management trainer and consultant as well as a psychotherapist with a background in trans-actional analysis, co-counselling, neuro-linguistic programming and enneagram analysis. The first page is loose, but the binding otherwise firm, and all pages are clean. There is general browning throughout. The cover shows wear consistent with age (rubbing of edges & angles, some damage to corners), and the spine is creased but not broken. Author's signature on title page in blue biro.
