CHOPIN: Les Sylphides Hugo Rignold - PMD1003

£7.99

Product description

Les Sylphides (arranged by Gordon Jacob)

Les Sylphides is a short, non-narrative ballet; described as a "romantic reverie" and frequently cited as the first ballet to be simply about mood and dance - Les Sylphides has no plot but instead consists of several white-clad sylphs dancing in the moonlight with the "poet" or "young man" dressed in white tights and a black tunic. Its original choreography was by Michel Fokine, with music by Frédéric Chopin, orchestrated by Alexander Glazunov.

Gordon Jacob was an important twentieth century English composer whose eclectic conservatism and willingness to produce attractive trifles set him at odds with most of the progressives and elitists of his day. In the 1930s, as a result of the influence of Constant Lambert, Jacob became an important contributor to the development and success of the Sadlers Wells Ballet Company. Jacob was one of several younger composers who created original scores or new compilations and arrangements for this vibrant company. Jacob composed one original ballet (Uncle Remus) during that period, but his major contribution was new orchestrations for established works, like Les Sylphides.
