A scarce box set of five 10 inch vinyl LPs of English Traditional Songs, with printed lyrics, published by English By Radio, BBC London. Included are two 7 inch records of Songs from Shakespeare and Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes. English by Radio was the name given to a department of the BBC World Service in the mid 1940s. They produced programmes for beginners, for intermediate and advanced learners of English and for adult learners and children. There were several series for teaching language comprehension with a help of song lyrics. No specific publication date is evident, but the smaller record sleeves are printed on the back with a BBC copyright date of 1960; they also show an address for Editorial Alhambra, S.A., Madrid. A Spanish price label on the back of the box translates as 'seven albums and texts', indicating that the set was issued for learners in Spain. The records are long play 33 1/3, mono. The five LPs are accompanied by leaflets containing the lyrics and artist credits. The third LP has English Christmas carols sung by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. Each of the 10 inch records is held in a light polythene sleeve inside a standard white sleeve. The two 7 inch records are held in inside their own card covered booklets which have printed lyrics and colour illustrations; the Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes are specially for children. The records are in excellent condition and have only minor handling marks plus an occasional very faint cross track mark. Holding all the items is a strong flip-top black box, approx. 28cm x 28cm x 3cm; the surface has some light general handling marks and slight discolouration to the edges of the front illustration; on the top rear corner is an area of white marks. The item is a marvellous collection of over 5 dozen songs which will interest any fans of traditional music.
