Product description

HAYDN: STRING QUARTETS Op.76, Op.77 & Op.103

The six String Quartets, Op.76 were composed in 1797 or 1798; they form the last complete set of string quartets that Haydn composed. The Op.76 quartets are among Haydn's most ambitious chamber works, deviating more than their predecessors from standard sonata form and each emphasising their thematic continuity through the seamless and near-continual exchange of motifs between instruments. In addition to not using the expected sonata form in some of the string quartet's first movements, Haydn employs uncommon forms in other movements such as a canon, a fantasy and an alternativo.

Two of the Op. 77 Quartets were completed in 1799, but there are only two completed Quartets from the projected set of six, as well as two movements from a third that were published separately as Opus 103 in 1806 when it became obvious that the aged composer would not complete the work. Haydn's failure to finish the whole set was not caused by age or incapacity, but were probably due to the appearance of Beethoven's Opus 18 string quartets, which were published in 1801. The Opus 18 represented a direct challenge to Haydn's supremacy in the quartet genre — a challenge that the older composer could or would not meet.
