PROKOFIEV: Piano Concerto No.5, WEILL: Music from 'The Threepenny Opera' Erich Leinsdorf - LSC-3121

£11.99

Product description

PROKOFIEV: Piano Concerto No.5 in G major, Op.55
WEILL: Music from 'The Threepenny Opera' (Kleine Dreigoschenmusik)

Berlin during the late twenties and early thirties was a microcosm of a nation in upheaval; politically the extremes of left and right in Germany were moving apart; the social effects were nowhere more colourfully obvious than in Berlin. In this restless atmosphere Prokofiev gave the world premiere of his fifth and final piano concerto in October 1932, with the composer at the piano and Wilhelm Furtwangler conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The concerto is a dazzling tour-de-force for the soloist, with much virtuosic interplay from the orchestra.

Kurt Weill's opera 'The Threepenny Opera'; a very free adaptation of John Gay's 'The Beggar's Opera' with a libretto by Weill's long-term collaborator Bertolt Brecht, was an immediate and enormous success, running to more than 4000 performances. Weill's Kleine Dreigoschenmusik is a suite of some of the best-known pieces from the score.
