The cover is leather bound with gilded lettering. There is distinctive evidence of spine splitting and foxing, exposing the binding, and the cover. There is also discoloration to the pages and some foxing to the cover and bumping to the corners. All of the pages inside the booklet are intact, with minimal fading to the ink on the pages. There is a stamped signature of Arthur Sullivan on an inside page.

The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of a young pirate apprentice named Frederic who has come to the end of his indentured period. As it turns out, Frederic was indentured by mistake. His half-deaf nurse had been instructed to apprentice him to a "pilot" but got it a little wrong. The Pirates of Penzance is set during the reign of Queen Victoria. Act I of the operetta occurs on a rocky seashore on the coast of Cornwall, England. Act II is set in a ruined chapel by moonlight.
