A Candle Lighted by The Lord

£34.99

Product description

A Candle Lighted by The Lord - Anon (Mrs Ross)

London: William Mullan & Son. first edition 1879. pp 228 plus worthy six page gazette.

No dust jacket. Maroon cloth embellished with stamped scene of nautical distress: "the snowy sails appeared as beautiful as the wings of an angel". Gilt title panels to front and spine.
Corners frayed to 5mm but only to upper. Spine is shiny: obviously well handled over the past 140 years.

The binding has failed along the spine strip and the upper board thus hangs free. This looks repairable in skilled hands. Block edges soiled and unplaned.

All pages tanned. Eight full page illustrations of destitute girls with babes in arms and general theme of God-fearing worthiness: rear paste down sticker for the Religious Tract society: published at 1/6 and to be sold at 10d, with No Discount!

Wonder how this unique item ended up online?

Most of the second-hand items you see online have been donated, by supporters like you, to our high street stores. Each item is then priced, photographed and listed on this site by our amazing team of volunteers from across the country.

After you have bought your item, our team of volunteers package and dispatch it from the Shop straight to you or your chosen recipient.

All profits from the sales of our goods go towards funding Oxfam's work around the world. We rely on your donations to sell online so please keep the cycle of goodness going!

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
