This book, by acclaimed German sinologist Richard Wilhelm, aims at a comprehensive survey: no tedious enumeration of dates, wars, and sovereigns, but as clear an account as possible of the forces responsible for the various periods of Chinese civilisation and culture, making the treatment of each subject more or less detailed in accordance with its cultural significance.
Sandy coloured cloth boards which are crinkled and slightly discoloured. Embossed design to front with a gold coat of arms below. Gold text to spine. The rear board seems to have suffered some slight water damage, which has left a stain and the cloth has rippled a bit. This damage is confined to the boards and has not penetrated into the text or the endpapers at all. Spine shows signs of shelf damage, with small rips to cloth. Some bumping to corners, with front lower corner frayed. Pictorial endpapers with map illustration. The hinge between the frontispiece and title page has split, revealing the webbing of the spine. However, the binding is otherwise secure. Tanning to outer edges and minor foxing of text block which is otherwise clean and free from annotation or marginalia.
