Allard Gold Portfolio, 1937-59

£22.99

Product description

pp 180

Softback in good condition with numerous black and white photographs and illustrations. Laminated illustrated cover slightly bumped at edges, corners and base of spine. Text and illustrations clean and tightly-bound.

When Sydney Allard built his first special from the remains of a crashed V8 ford in 1936 his intention was simply to create a suitable vehicle for use in motoring events and certainly had no thought of starting a manufacturing business. However, the car proved so successful that he began to receive requests to build replicas for other enthusiasts and accordingly built another eleven before the outbreak of war in 1939. In 1946 the Allard Motor Car company was formed. Some 1,900 cars were built until the changing economic climate of 1958 made production no longer viable and 1957 Motor Show was the last at which Allard cars were represented. During this lifespan the name became known world-wide particularly in America where the J2 series cars played a major role in the revival of sports car racing. (This book) sums up the achievement of a small private company with the unique distinction of being controlled by a man who regularly competed in motor sport with cars bearing his own name and who once said he had no wish to become a millionaire and only wanted his Company to support his personal interests and to provide employment for others. (Taken from the frontispiece)
