Scarce first edition of this history of the establishment and early development of the United States of America. 573 pages plus Appendices (which include the Declaration Of Independence, the Articles Of Confederation and the Constitution) and Index. The book includes many illustrations and maps, some in colour. No dust jacket. Black cloth boards with red decoration to the front and rear boards, red titling to the front board, and gilt titling to the spine. There are a few small marks to the boards, and general wear and rubbing to the boards and board edges, also to the spinal margins, particularly the head and tail of the spine. The front board has the remnant of a ring mark. The corners are bumped and worn. Page edges are dusty, with some light foxing, and a small ink stain to the lower edges. Pages are tanned. There is a gift inscription in ink to the front pastedown. A semi-circular water stain affects the upper margin of virtually the whole book, although decreasing in size from front to back of the book. The lower margins of pages 111 to 121 (inclusive) are affected by a triangular brown stain, and there is a small ink stain in the margin of pages 119/120. The text block is tightly bound.
