Chronique du Règne de Charles IX

£14.99

Product description

La Chronique de Charles IX was published in 1829, and constitutes, in the opinion of Mr. George Saintsbury, the best French series of historical fictions. This Chronique conveys a fair idea of the ill-omened reign of one of the last kings of the Valois dynasty, and gives graphic and interesting descriptions of that period of French History. (From the preface.) It describes a highly dramatic episode of the religious wars in France, dealing more particularly with the massacre of St. Bartholomew and the first siege of La Rochelle. Although fiction is mingled with historical facts, yet this book may be of service to the reader in studying those important events. The plot of the story is laid during one of the short truces so often met with in the civil wars of the period. (From the Introduction.)

This book is a French reader for English speakers and includes a preface and introduction in English together with notes and French-English vocabulary at the rear of the book.

Good condition. Light wear to boards, mainly at extremities. There are some light pencil annotations but pages are otherwise clean and undamaged. Binding is sound. No dust jacket.
