Vols II, II and IV only of four volume set. All with matching full leather binding with blind-stamped/gilt decoration, five raised bands and gilt titles to spines. Edges of text block gilded. 1829. Good condition. Corners,  edges and particularly spine ends bumped and rubbed but binding of all three solid and tight. Leather to front and back still good. Black, red and white check endpapers. Frontispiece to each has colour plate illustration plus vignette to title page. Each volume has further colour plate illustrations. Internally bright and clean, occasional brown spotting and grubby marks. This is a charming set, sadly missing the first volume, but with wonderful illustrations. First published in 1774 in eight volumes, this comprehensive work by Oliver Goldsmith attempted to bring together a history of the earth plus its geographical features and animal life. It was written in simple English as he wanted to write for people so that they would know what a certain animal would look like if they came across it while traveling. Volume II   - History of Man and Quadrupeds (2nd of 2 parts);Volume III -  History of British and Foreign Birds;Volume IV - History of Fishes, Reptiles and Insects.
