Histoire de Manon Lescaut [1890s, French text]

£45.00

Product description

Undated, estimated published around the late 19th century. Published by Librarie Charles Tallandier.

Beautiful binding. Green leather with embossed gilt decoration and lettering. Has a border decoration on the leather around the internal edges of the cover. 5 raised spine bands, and gilt edges to the text block. Each page has a red border/surround.

Manon Lescaut (L'Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut) is a novel by French author Antoine François Prévost. Published in 1731, it is the seventh and final volume of Mémoires et aventures d'un homme de qualité (Memoirs and Adventures of a Man of Quality). It was controversial in its time and was banned in France upon publication. Despite this, it became very popular and pirated editions were widely distributed. In a subsequent 1753 edition, the Abbé Prévost toned down some scandalous details and injected more moralizing disclaimers. It was later to form the basis of Puccini's opera.

This is a French edition written in French. It is well illustrated with some 15 illustrations by Maurice Leloir - many in colour and around 200 other illustrated page headers in the text by Jules Huyot. It tells the story of Manon and her lover the Chevalier des Grieux and their adventures together.

A former owner's bookplate is attached to the front end paper. Also has an owner's name written on the end papers.

There is some wear and a short split along the spine hinge, but nonetheless overall it is in a good bright and clean condition with a firm binding.
