Hypatia or New Foes with an Old Face - Charles Kingsley

£10.99

Product description

The author is Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) who also wrote 'The Water Babies'. This is a fictionalised account of the life of the Philosopher Hypatia and tells the story of a young monk called Philammon who travels to Alexandria, where he becomes mixed up in the political and religious battles of the day. Originally published in the 1850s and intended as a Christian apologia it reflects typical 19th Century religious sentiments of the day. These may include anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic sentiments and possibly racial prejudice.
The book is calf-bound with a decorative green and gilt paste down to the front which is a continuation of the end papers. The spine is gilt embossed with the title and author in gilt lettering. The top, fore and bottom edges are bright gilt with some tanning to the top edge. The spine is bumped at the top and the bottom. The book edges and corners show age-related wear. The frontispiece has a black and white plate of Hypatia. The pages are clean and the binding is good. There is an inscription on an end paper 'To Dear Sarah, Xmas 1903'.
At the front of the book is a list of volumes published by Walter Scott Limited and at the back of the book are further pages of advertisements for books by the publisher including 'Lady Cycling' by Miss F J Erskine.
No publication date, but circa 1900
