John Clare's Birds

£40.00

Product description

John Clare has been described as 'the finest poet of Britain's minor naturalists and the finest naturalist of all Britain's major poets'. In this collection of his writings he can be seen at the height of his powers in both roles. Clare's check-list of birds is supplemented with descriptions taken from the full range of his work. His keen observation of birds around him in his native Northamptonshire combined with his natural poetic gifts to produce unique and vivid descriptions of landscape and bird life, several of which are published for the first time. The result is a natural history of singular literary distinction.
The editors have retained Clare's original spelling and use of vernacular names, which have a charm and interest of their own, and have supplied glosses where necessary. Latin names are provided to aid ornithological identification.
The book is illustrated by the wildlife artist Robert Gillmor, who has drawn many of the birds in their natural habitats.
