Mammy's Reminiscences

£9.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

While in "slave dialect", this book is fascinating in its modern sensitivity to racial stereotypes, given that the author, an Alabama lady wrote it in 1898. She makes the point in her preface that she was trying to capture plantation folk lore, with a correct representation of the old time Mammy and Daddy, the devoted foster parents to the children of the South. She wants to set that record straight, because of the gross exaggerations and caricatures by the "minstrel" performers and other impersonators of the times. As well as the stories, there is a lullaby, with score, composed by the author.

B/w drawings by Clara Weaver Parrish.

First. The covers are slightly grubby/faded. The binding is beginning to loosen, no detached pages. Two pages have pieces missing, text unaffected. Free of spotting/foxing.

On the title page is what appears to be a genuine author's signature.
