A scarce seven volume set of 'Memories of the Months' by Sir Herbert Maxwell, some of which are first edition. Green cloth covers with gilt titles on the fronts and spines. ; the green colour does vary with three volumes in a more olive-type green and three veering towards a more bottle-type green. All spines are bumped at the tops and bases, the front board of vol II is bumped at the top edge, the front board of vol V has a short yellowish line near the right edge. All page edges are untrimmed, some still unseparated. Binding is good on all volumes. Owner name dated 1910 on first free endpaper of first series. Some tanning to first and last endpapers particularly series seven. Illustrated with tissue-protected plates many of which are photogravure, some from photographs. Maxwell's Memories of the Months comprised seven series 1897 through to 1922. The First Series (1908, sixth impression) has seven plates. The Second Series (1900, first edition) has five plates. The Third Series (1903, first edition) has six plates the protective tissues of which are foxed and which in turn has lightly affected some of the plates. The Fourth Series (1907, first edition) has six plates. The Fifth Series (1909, first edition) has six plates. The Sixth Series (1919, first edition) has five plates, the tissue guard of the frontispiece is tanned, no other protective tissues. The Seventh Series (1922, first edition) has five plates the tissue guard of the frontispiece is tanned, no other protective tissues. The Rt. Hon. Sir Herbert Eustace Maxwell, 7th Baronet of Monreith, KT, PC, FRS, FRGS (1845 - 1937) was a Scottish novelist, essayist, horticulturalist and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 to 1906.
