Monsieur Beaucaire - BoothTarkington - 1903

£9.99

Product description

This is a short novel by the Pullitzer prize winning American author Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) who also wrote 'The Magnificent Ambersons'.
The story is set amongst 'high society' in 18th Century Bath and follows the adventures of the Frenchman Monsieur Beaucaire, a barber...or is he?!
Monsieur Beaucaire is the barber to France's King Louis XV -- that is, until the royal hairstylist takes up with chambermaid Mimi and is subsequently banished from the kingdom. Forced to assume someone else's identity, Beaucaire quickly gets wrapped up in an outrageous web of political intrigue, involving an impending war between France and Spain, an assassination plot and his own potential marriage to the Princess of Spain.

Green cloth covers with gilt title and author on the front cover. The Title and publisher are in gilt lettering on the spine along with an attractive green leaf design which also appears on the left hand side of the front cover with red flowers. The covers and spine have faded patches and a few marks. The spine has a little bumping at the top. The top edge gilt. The bottom edge has foxing. The inside covers and the end papers show tanning, but the pages are generally clean and the illustrative plates, including the frontispiece, have been protected by india paper and are clean and bright. The illustrations are by C D Williams. The names of two previous owners have been written on the title page with a date 'July 11th 1903'. The book has its original green ribbon page marker. The binding is good.
