As well as his massive novel "Les Miserables", and his other well-known work "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame", Victor Hugo was a writer of poetry, a dramatist and an artist. Here is a collection of his poetical works, in a handsome edition to match the 5 volumes of " Les Miserables", preceded by a series of prefaces, dating from 1822 to 1826. The Odes are divided into 5 volumes, the Ballades simply numbered consecutively.
Victor Marie Hugo (1802–1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement, considered one of the greatest and best-known French writers.
Our book is one of a 'new edition' issued in 1881 by Hachette, bound in dark blue textured cloth with line borders to front and back, and a blue leather spine with 4 raised bands; rich gilt tooling on panels 1, 3, 5, and author and title in gilt lettering in panels 2 and 4. Very little wear externally - some rubbing of spine angles and only very minimal bumping of corners - and the gilt is bright. All page edges gilt - also bright. Inside, marbled endpapers clean and undamaged; binding tight with no loose pages; pages generally browned/foxed, some more than others; no annotations or other blemishes. A very handsome book.
