Hard cover. No dust jacket. No publication date but published by Collins c. 1920's. A novel by William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882) the English historical novelist who is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.
Originally serialised in 1841, the novel is divided into six 'books' and describes the events of grocer Stephen Bloundel's life between 1665-1666 incorporating the events of the Great Plague and Great Fire of London.
Burgundy cloth covers. The title, author and publisher appear in gilt lettering on the spine along with a gilt 'butterfly' stamp. The spine is very faded and bumped at the top and bottom. The four corners turn inwards. There is some very light foxing on the top, fore and bottom edges. The inside covers and end papers are in generally good condition. The illustrated title page has a 2 cm piece missing on the bottom left hand-side. The pages are clean and the text clear. There are a few illustrations amongst the text. The binding is good.
