Plant Hunting in Nepal

£9.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

For three months in the autumn of 1971 a group of horticultural botanists travelled through a little known area of East Nepal collecting seed of plants suitable for cultivation in Western gardens. As a result many new and interesting seeds were introduced, several for the first time, and the plants are now to be found in some of the most famous gardens and collections in Europe. The author, a member of the expedition and a well-known plantsman, garden consultant and plant explorer, here tells the story of the expedition, describing the plants as well as the birds and people that were encountered. Many familiar garden plants originate in the Himalaya and the author describes their occurrence in the wild and comments on their status and cultivation in gardens. The fate of those plants introduced by the expedition is discussed and both failures and successes are analysed.
This book will appeal to all gardeners, horticulturalists and botanists, particularly if the high mountains and alpine terrain also fascinate them. The text is supplemented by 20 full-colour plates and 39 superb line drawings of the plants discovered and of the locations in which they were found.
