Pleasant Days in Pleasant Places

WAS £14.99 £8.99

Product description

This is a rare and collectable example of travel writing from the nineteenth century first
published in 1875. It describes the author's visits to 17 locations, including
Shanklin, St David, Sandwich, Ightham Mote, and Kenilworth. The writing is
readable and includes history as well as personal observation. It includes 15
full page illustrations and another 15 within the text, all from woodcuts.

Book was originally presented as a school special prize by the Portsmouth School Board in 1903 as
shown by gilt design on front board and bookplate on front pastedown.

The book is undated but described as the fourth edition. The third edition appears to have been the
last public edition and was published in 1885. It is possible that the fourth
edition was published shortly after this, perhaps as a special run.

Good condition. Red leather boards with banded spine. Gilt text and design to front and spine. Some edge
rubbing and bumping to corners and a shallow scratch on the back cover. Blue
marbling on endpapers and page edges. Some page yellowing and occasional grubby
marks. Text and illustrations clear and binding firm. No dust jacket
