Prabuddha Das Gupta - Women - First Edition

£500.00

Product description

Introduction by Dom Moraes - extract - "Prabuddha Das Gipta's photographs in this book are almost exclusively about aspects of a woman's body when it is naked. Reason enough for some self-styled puritan somewhere in the country to confuse his work with pornography. This is strange, in a country which has seen so much erotic poetry written and so much erotic sculpture carved, but it is so. Modern Indians, or many of them, are puritanical in a shallow and misogynist way. This is probably due to misinterpretation or distortion of their most ancient theologies. But pornography and Das Gupta's photographs are as far apart as the hyena and the lion. 'If there's a painting of a nude,' Das Gupta told me regretfully, 'it would be all right. But a photograph brings in reality.'"

Unpaginated; some minor wear at extremities of both book and (French fold) dust jacket, contents of book as new.

Weight 1600g. Size: 35.1 x 24.8 x 2 cm.
