Royal Copenhagen - Quaking Grass - 9729: Ramekin / Sugar Bowl

£24.99

Product description

Royal Copenhagen - Quaking Grass - 9729. This is a lovely ramekin / sugar bowl from the Quaking Grass pattern. This is in lovely condition

Quaking Grass, Hjertegræs in Danish, was designed by Thorkild Ohlsen, famous for his beautiful and subtle porcelain forms with elegant lines, and perfect proportions. Quaking grass combines Art Nouveau and Oriental-inspired, hand-painted botanical elements in patterns that are timeless and elegant. The name derives from an early-19th century botanical illustration of the ‘Doxia’ plant, more-commonly known as ‘Quaking Grass’. Common in Denmark, it is loved for its golden “Japanese lantern” style seed pods that ‘quake’ with the slightest breeze, making a field of Doxia dance with energy. The painters who also painted the famous ‘Flora Danica’ porcelain service produced the hand painted motifs. Quaking Grass pattern was produced from the early 1930s until approximately 1960, as it simply did not go out of style.

‘Quaking Grass’ was primarily sold in Europe and the United Kingdom, and was extremely expensive when new, with a dinner service for 14 with serving pieces selling for nearly £4,000 in the Late-1950’s, when this service was made, an astronomical sum at a time when a service for 12 of Noritake, sold for around £100.
