Silver Chief; Dog of the North

£19.99

Product description

From the blurb:

"All the lovable traits, human traits and charactersitics that are to be found in every dog, regardless of colour, breed, size or shape, are to be found in Silver Chief. But these traits were lying dormant until brought to the surface through kindliness and understanding.

Silver Chief, the son of Dee - a husky mother, run wild - wild and of a wolf father, is taught to stalk for food and to beware of man. One day he sees his mother killed and he hates mankind.

Sergeant Jim Thorne of the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police, trailing a half-breed murder suspect, takes up his winter quarters in Silver Chief`s hunting grounds. He determines to capture Silver Chief and make him his friend and leader of his huskies. After many trials, Jim succeeds. At first, Silver Chief is full of rage, suspicion fear and resentment. Then a devoted friendship grows between man and dog.

In the meantime, the half-breed learns of Thorne`s mission, succeeds in ambushing him and shoots him, shattering his leg. Silver Chief, however, captures the would-be murderer. With the aid of his dog, crippled Thorne compels the prisoner to minister to his wants, until weeks later, a lull in the storm gives him courage to start the long sledge trip to the post with the prisoner. With only the great dog as his aid, and the prisoner to do the work, he starts on the long trip through deep snow in zero weather.

Read for yourself the fascinating details of this unvarnished, rugged adventure story. The illustrations by Kurt Wiese greatly increase the enjoyment of the book."

Excellent pages with some edge-wear. Includes a dust-jacket in good condition. Inscription on the front flyleaf.
