The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane

£45.00

Product description

A two volume set (Volumes 1 & 2) translated from the French of Le Sage by T. Smollett and illustrated by Jean Gigoux. A lovely example of this most picaresque of picaresque novels, influential since publication, referenced by everyone from Swift to Dostoevsky to Sacher-Masoch and translated repeatedly from French to Spanish to English and back again. Scholarly thought lays its original authorship at the feet of Alain-Rene Lesage, although there are compelling arguments that suggest its original author might have been Spanish. A richly bawdy bit of social observation that laid the ground work for many staples of the genre; wicked robbers, hypocritical clergy, wise and cunning servants and the occasional dim witted nobleman.

The books are hardback, in fair condition and are leather and cloth bound. There is an owners inscription on the end-page in volume 1 dated 1887 and an owners name on volume 2 front page; the back board of volume 1 is loose and index pages are missing; there are marks on the cloth boards; and there is foxing on many pages. The end pages are beautifully marbled and the binding is generally firm and the pages clean. Interestingly, where the leather binding on the spine of volume 1 has come loose the original newsprint padding is visible and readable.
