The Conventionalists

£15.99

Product description

Oxford student Algy Banister, second son of a landed family, finds the eternal cycle of riding, shooting, and tea a hollow and soul-stifling routine. Sharing his doubts with Fr. Benson, the priest senses the seed of a contemplative in the awkward boy. However, Algy is neither Catholic nor even particularly devout, so Fr. Benson introduces him to some fellow churchmen and orchestrates a visit to the Carthusian monastery in Parkminster. Algy's older brother's death causes him a spiritual crisis, and he declares for the Catholic Church, even though it means banishment from the manor house to which he is now heir. The lure of the monastery is strong, but Fr. Benson must pit his subtle guidance against plans of Algy's mother, Lady Brasted, who is determined that Algy's friend Mary will be his future wife.

Book is in good condition for its age, with some scuffing to the edges and corners on the cover and slight bending inwards of the top corners. Gold lettering on a dark blue cloth board. There is overall yellowing of the pages and a few marks along the outer page edges, but otherwise no creases or damage. There are couple of pencil marks on the inside of the cover and on the fly leaf, and a book plate has been stuck to the inside front cover. Binding is tight and intact. There is a sizeable section of advertisements for other books of the period at the back of the book. 3rd Edition, dated 1908.
