The Division-Viol or the Art of Playing Ex-tempore Upon a Ground

£50.00

Product description

The Division-Viol or the Art of Playing Ex-tempore Upon a Ground - Christopher Simpson
A lithographic facsimile of the second edition

A de-luxe edition published by J. Curwen & Sons Ltd. in 1965. pp 67

The first edition was printed in 1659, shortly before the Great Fire of London, and the second edition was further delayed by war, monarchy issues and other calamities.

This facsimile appeared with a restricted distribution of 500 copies (of which this is number 205)

It is a faithful reproduction, printed on parchment, with the dust jacket held within a discoloured PVC sleeve. We have not attempted to extract the jacket but it appears to be in as-new condition, as are the surprisingly modern-looking cloth boards: tessellated patterning.

The book feels very strong and very few marks are to be found inside. There is an ink owner signature to the paste down dated 1968 and a few very neat light pencil notes to pp 8-9. These may be erased quite easily.

Block edges lightly soiled but the edges and corners are nice and sharp thanks to the generous overhang in the boards.
The owner, whose name appears on the paste down, was a singer with the Leicester University, as evidenced by a concert flyer tucked inside the sleeve.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
