Sub title "Being the Gospel according to St John with an introduction on the life and writings of the evangelist". Macduff was a Scottish divine who had a considerable success with a sequence of devotional books.
The emphasis in this little book is the word "Golden". Thus the front board has an elaborate decoration in gilt and with the title in gilt lettering. There is gilt lettering also to the spine although it is a bit faded. All the internal print is in gold and the pages have linear margins and decorations in gilt. The text block edges are gilt. The gospel itself has floral decorative margins in gilt, and the print is in two columns. Capitals are emphasised with enlarged and decorated font. Boards bevelled. Binding good. Only mark is a dedication on the end page dated 1885. This was the first edition of this volume.
