The History of Brecknockshire. Glanusk edition - Theophilus Jones
Brecknock: Blisset, Davies & Co. of 14 Bridge Street. Special edition, 1909. pp 457 (200+257) plus indices
In semi poor condition: blue cloth, half bound in tan leather. Mildew damage to front face and many small marks everywhere. Very good, well matured leather sections.
This is a very large book and the covers have become completely detached. The text block inside is rather dog-eared: there is a large fold out map to the front that is loose and very tatty to the peripheries. All pages tanned but faces clean. Top edges rather badly planed, other edges roughcut.
Sir Joseph Russell Bailey, Bart., First baron of Glanusk assembled the supplementary notes that embellish this volume, thus imparting great scarcity value.
Paste down signature of ownership dated 1934. Embossed stamp: "Lower House, Llyswen, Brecon" (an address a few miles north of Brecon).
Rear paste down bears a ball-point family tree, rather difficult to follow, of early 20th century names. There are various other family trees through the volume, along with pedigrees of the rich and famous, going back hundreds of years; diagrams of who owned what, notable historical events etc. Occasional engravings, diagrams and maps.
Some bad creasing to rear end papers.
Publishers' preface tells us that Jones wrote a first edition in 1800. This book is composed of two volumes, the second of which has tissue protection to the title page. It will be of interest to the local historian, being the definitive title of its time, but has suffered considerable neglect over the years.
