£129.00

Product description

64 pp; 53 pp. Fair / Poor. Spine outer cover has mostly perished, page block uncut, degrees of foxing to some papers and age discolouration throughout. Binding remains complete, but is shaken, and the copy needs to be handled with care. 'The History of Mansfield and it's Environs. In two parts: I. Antiquities; including a description of two Roman Villas, near Mansfield Woodhouse, discovered by H. Rooke Esq. in the year 1786 ; with an account of some late discoveries, never before printed. II. The present state.'

A history of the town of Mansfield in Nottinghamshire by William Harrod. After attending school at Market Harborough, Harrod worked as a journeyman printer in London before opening a business as printer, bookseller, and stationer in the High Street, Stamford, Lincolnshire, in 1776. In 1799 Harrod moved to Mansfield in the hope of better trade and here he commenced collaboration with the local antiquary Major Hayman Rooke. In 1801 he published The history of Mansfield and its environs.

Despite problems due to it being over 200 years old, this copy remains totally readable, with all pages, plates and fold-outs intact, with no parts visibly missing. This is a rare 1st edition.
