The Life and Exploits of the Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha [Two Volumes, 1809]

£150.00

Product description

Published in 1809 by S.A. & H. Oddy, Oxford Street.
Ornately bound in half leather, blue/ green bindings with gilt decoration and lettering, marbled boards, end papers, and page edges. Black & white engravings found throughout the book, and comprehensive pages of notes found in each volume. Includes a fold out map of Spain and Portugal in Volume I.

Revised and corrected by Charles Jarvis, with a short biography of Cervantes.

Don Quixote is a middle-aged gentleman from the region of La Mancha in central Spain. Obsessed with the chivalrous ideals touted in books he has read, he decides to take up his lance and sword to defend the helpless and destroy the wicked. After a first failed adventure, he sets out on a second one with a somewhat befuddled labourer named Sancho Panza, whom he has persuaded to accompany him as his faithful squire. In return for Sancho’s services, Don Quixote promises to make Sancho the wealthy governor of an isle. On his horse, Rocinante, a barn nag well past his prime, Don Quixote rides the roads of Spain in search of glory and grand adventure. He gives up food, shelter, and comfort, all in the name of a peasant woman, Dulcinea del Toboso, whom he envisions as a princess.

In Fair Condition:
Volume I does not have a title page.
Both volumes have rubbing edge-wear, and the heads of the spines are damaged. The leather on the covers is a bit faded in places. The front board of Volume II has become detached, but is still present. Some foxing.
The name of a previous owner has been inscribed on the contents page of the first volume. A hand-written note is written at the end of the "Life of the Author" section pointing out how Shakespeare and Cervantes both died on the 23rd April 1616.
The Text block are in good condition and the pages are legible.
